Sleep is critical to every function of a healthy body, and it plays a key role in the appearance of our skin. The skin renews itself every 28 days or so - old skin cells are shed and newly-formed cells are pushed up toward the surface - but this process of cell turnover and production is happening all the time and speeds up at night. This makes nighttime the most opportune time to be selective about what we put on our face, to ensure we’re providing our cells with the specialized products needed to enhance and maximize this process of renewal.
Exactly why is nighttime so important to the skin?
Let’s back up.
During the day, the skin is hard at work protecting itself from the sun and other environmental toxins. When we sleep at night, our nervous system shifts gears and the skin is able to enter a more relaxed state. Blood and oxygen circulate more freely to the surface of the skin, and our skin uses this time to build collagen and drain fluids and toxins. This process of renewal and repair happens regardless of what treatments we apply to our skin, but think of this time as an opportunity to supercharge the already amazing process of skin regeneration. That’s why Kakadu Dream’s products are specifically formulated for night-- to brighten, tone and detox screen-exposed skin.
Anything else?
The skin also needs adequate time to effectively complete this nightly renewal process; that’s why it’s recommended to get seven to eight hours of sleep. Skin regeneration and repair peaks during stages three and four of our sleep cycle - while we are in our “dream” state - so it’s imperative to give the body the time it needs to move in and out of these various stages. Circadian rhythm is important, too - your skin, just like your body, needs cues to indicate it’s time to rest; blue light plays a part in this process and should be avoided beginning two to three hours before bed.
With a bit of consideration and by selecting products and ingredients that enhance the nighttime skin renewal process, you’re sure to wake up to smoother, more even-toned and more radiant skin.
